How It Works

Prednisone is a prodrug — the liver converts it to prednisolone, the active form. Prednisolone (and all glucocorticoids) works by entering cells and binding to the glucocorticoid receptor (GR). The glucocorticoid-receptor complex then moves to the cell nucleus and powerfully suppresses the genes that produce inflammatory mediators: cytokines, prostaglandins, and leukotrienes.
